Ultraviolet germicidal irradiation (UVGI) has been used to treat water for over a century however more efficient systems are still required as an estimated 1.8 billion people still drink water contaminated with E. coli each day, leading to approx 3000 deaths per day due to infected water.
The search for alternative UVC sources, other that mercury-lamps, has been promoted by the United Nations Environmental Programme (UNEP), through the Minamata Convention on Mercury.
The aim is to prevent the anthropogenic spread of mercury that damages both human health and the environment. UNEP aims to stop the production of mercury products by 2020 which encourages manufacturers to source mercury-free alternatives like UVC-LEDs .
Our technology is both mercury-free and more effective than mercury halides.
